British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," he commented. "They were among thousands of British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military carried out what it described as a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
