Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to challenge certain rulings from the official, following the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
